Would it be wrong to measure my nipples?

Well, would it? This week has been a new low in symptom-spotting. Let's be clear now that I'm on CD7. And yet in the last couple of days I've actually been questioning whether I am actually pregnant and my last period wasn't actually a real period. And the symptoms that I've been spotting?

Well I've been quite tired (ignoring the fact that I have a cold which is no doubt making me feel a bit off-colour), my last period was fairly short and light (ignoring the fact that all my periods have been short and light since I came off the pill) and one day, my nipples were looking huge (ignoring the fact that they are generally pretty big - too big for my liking, but that's another post...).

So, in a scientific manner (did you know I used to be a research chemist?), I'm thinking I could measure my nipples and record the data to track changes. But I can't decide whether a straight ruler would suffice or whether I need to use a piece of string to follow the contours, then measure against a ruler... decisions, decisions...

Or I could just go and lie down in a darkened room and try to reconnect with reality...

  1. I learn something new every day on this fertility journey :)) Never heard of measuring nipples before... anything is worth a try. Great to be sharing this journey with you xoxo

  2. I'm partly hoping that it would stop me symptom-spotting.. if I knew what the pattern was, I'd be less surprised when looking in the mirror any given CD morning ;)

  3. Over from ICLW and I like it! Maybe you could present your findings to the next tight-bottomed doctor you meet? Along with a nice graph of fluctuating breast weight? Saw this on a documentary (must have been a baaaad night of tv) but apparently you get a large bowl of water full to the top. Weigh said bowl. Put in breast - begs the question a separate graph for each breast? or just a different graph line? hmmmm. Back to the point - I think - put in breast (easier said then done) breast displaces water - re-weigh bowl...and then there is some calculation involved and I don't know what it is - but hey - food for thought! xxxxx

Becoming a follower as I relate to being a foreigner in a strange country going through all this - I have 'crossed' over now, but you never forget. I made it back to blighty for my treatment which I was v grateful for, so I am impressed you are doing this and are still (vaguely) sane! xxxxx

  4. I've considered photographing mine, I'm usually convinced they've changed shape or got darker. The only camera we have here is my husbands work camera so perhaps there's too much room for disaster. The bowl idea is the best!

  5. Hahahaha! You should definitely do that. I'm totally going to remember that for my next obsessive 2WW.

  6. I want to recommend you go back to work! Or find a time consuming hobby! :-P

It does sound like an interesting experiment though. I was wondering about nipples the other day, but not to the point of thinking about scientifically measuring them. I think you would have to use a piece of string as a straight ruler wouldn't measure variations of 'bulge.'

  7. Ha, why not if it makes it any clearer. Have you taken a HPT at all?

  8. You are too funny! I'm being naughty and reading this at work, and my coworkers are wondering why I'm choking on my glass of water (I'm lucky it didn't spray on my computer). I'm so glad you posted these thoughts...I have them (or similar ones)...as does every other fertility-challeneged woman I know. The comments are great too - as a "well-endowed" gal, I now MUST try the water in the bowl experiment. Thanks for putting a smile on my face today!

  9. over from ICLW--i'd totally do it! when looking for the elusive color change to darker nipples, i've considered getting paint chip samples so i'll know if they really are getting darker. anyways, i think i'd for the string!

  10. bahaa! Very funny! Hope they're getting bigger!

Try a chinese HPT - they work just fine. I just moved back to the US from Shanghai.

  11. Isn't it amazing the things infertility makes you obsess over? I am rolling over the thought of the water in the bowl experiment.

  12. Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions :) In no particular order...
Haven't tried an HPT because I 'know' that I'm not really pregnant - I definitely have too much time on my hands. @Kat - Working on the hobbies in the absence of a real job. I miss work but am still sure I made the right decision to leave :)
@luckyme/EBC - Have considered taking photos of my nips too! But hadn't thought of the paint samples.. love it!
@Kate - water bowl experiment is definitely worth a try.. but think my bloke might start to question my (hanging by a thread) sanity if he found that chart along with my BBTs!

  13. LOL! Now that is a new one! Love it! I actually often wonder if I'm actually pregnant, even after my period arrives. That's why I always test each month, just in case. Of course it has always been negative, but I would hate to be one of those girls who didn't know she was pregnant...ya know, like that tv show on TLC or something? I would hate that!
Let me know if the nipple measurements mean anything - ha! And good luck to you!

  14. @Alli.. the testing every month would definitely take away the uncertainty, but I found it so depressing in the past that I decided not to bother again unless I get to a 60 day cycle!
Will keep you updated on the nipples! Thanks :)
